When he’s outside his role as the Scarecrow he usually wears glasses and a tuxedo. While in the role as the Scarecrow he wears his famous Scarecrow Costume.

Dr. Jonathan Crane is a professor of psychology and he’s and expert in the psychology of fear. Dr. Crane has a phobia for bats and an obsession with fear. He likes experimenting with fear inducing drugs, which is an follow up on his obsession with fears. Dr. Crane tends to speak in nursery rhymes when speaking to another person. Jonathan is focusing very much on himself and his own needs and desires. if he wants something done he will do anything in his power to get it done, and he will force anyone in his way to get his will done. besides that he likes to create new drugs and test it on random people may find and kidnap for his experiments. besides his obsession with fear, he once felt the thrill of knowing fear, but now he no longer fears anything which makes him very depressed and dissappointed about himself.

Jonathan was bullied through his school years because he was very fond of books and his lanky frame. He had a crush on the cheerleader Sherry Squires but he got rejected by her when he asked her out. During the senior prom, Jonathan takes his revenge on his bully, Bo Griggs by dressing up in his scarecrow costume and brandishing a gun in the school parking lot, where Griggs gets in a car accident which paralyzes him and kills Sherry Squires. His obsession with fear leads him to the study of psychology where he gets a job at Arkham Asylum where he performs fear-inducing experiments on the inmates. He also had a job at the Gotham University as a professor in psychology with a specialty in phobias. He, however, got fired at the Gotham University by firing a gun in a packed room, accidently wounding a student. He takes his revenge by killing all the professors responsible for his termination. He later turns into the infamous Scarecrow and gets locked up in Arkham Asylum by batman. He later escapes Arkham with the help of Carmine Falcone, in his escape, Crane gasses batman which makes flee to his parents’ grave. Scarecrow later works with Falcone to rob a bank with Mad Hatter but they are stopped by batman and catwoman. After escaping from Arkham once again, he joins up with Two-Face in his gang. After being stopped by batman once again and once again escaping scarecrow is hired by penguin but he gets mutated into the Scarebeast, whom penguin uses to kill all his disloyal colleagues. However, Crane later shows up as an unmutated scarecrow where he later joins up with the sinistro corps where he contains a yellow power ring of Amon Sur, he however later loses that ring. he then returns to Gotham City to spread the name of the Scarecrow and fear throughout the city and trying his new fear toxins on unknowing and unwilling victims.

Scarecrow's chief weapon is a toxin he created called fear gas. With it, he can cause his victims' worst fear come to life or, he can cause a person to fear something they didn't before, as when he caused two guards at Arkham to fear glass in order to break out. This substance is verstile as it has been used in gas, darts, capsules, etc. His mask was made in order to enhance the effects of the hallucinogen while also acting as a gas mask of sorts to keep him from poisoning himself. Even so, he seems to have formed an immunity to fear, which depresses him. He also has a special system on his left hand, equipping each finger with a needle which can induce a person hit by one of the needles.
Close combat
Though he doesn't do so often, Scarecrow is skilled in hand-to-hand combat. In addition to being a master of crane style kung-fu, which he utilizes in a self-created style of combat known as "violent dancing" which also uses drunken boxing and makes use of his long arms and legs.
For weapons, he is skilled with farm implements such as pitchforks, sickles, and scythes.
Psychology
Scarecrow greatly understands the power and uses of fear. He even has a PhD in psychology. With this knowledge, he knows how to use words to affect a person's actions, once managing to drive two men to suicide with nothing but words. He also can use this insight to find people's mental weaknesses and exploit them.
Scarebeast
After some genetic manipulation done to him secretly by Dr. Linda Friitawa (also known as the criminal "Fright"),Scarecrow gains the ability to turn into a large monster with greatly enhanced strength, endurance, and a fear gas he naturally emits. However, he has to be under physical strain or duress to transform. when in this form he has the strength in match with Bane and the only way he can transform into this form is when undergoing harsh physical pain or near death.

the old warehouse seemed empty. It was in the old industrial quarter of the city, no man would ever go back here, it was said to be haunted. Not even the thugs dared to go all the way out there, it was said to be the scarecrows territory. Even without the fear toxins, people was afraid of going to the area. People never knew if this tale was true or if the Scarecrow was actually there, but people didn’t want to take any chances. Only the Falcone’s were brave enough to still use the old warehouses in the area. A small police pair had got a secret tip that the Falcones might have a new delivery of drugs in one of the warehouses. Officer Jack O’Neal and his partner Martin Johnson had gone to the area to see if they could find these drugs.
The streets were quiet, not a single soul was in the area. Not even any birds or anything, only the sound of sirens sounded in the distance. It was 2 in the night and Jack and Martin was sitting in their car and watched over the warehouse. The light from the street lights gave a small light in some of the areas of the street but they didn’t cover it all, leaving huge spots of dark areas. There was no wind in and no rain, everything seemed quiet.. too quiet. Besides having their nerves nearly on the outside of their skin, they decided to go check out the warehouse and see if they could find the drugs. They entered the building, the door made a quirking noise as they opened it slowly. They had their guns ready if they were to encounter any of Falcone’s men. The Warehouse was practically empty, besides from a little box standing in the middle of the room. The moonlight lit up the box so they were able to see it. Martin tried and flip the light switch, but it seemed the lights were out. They turned on their flashlights to search the room properly so they didn’t end up in an ambush. They got closer to the box, Jack pulled out a crowbar to open the box, but as he put the crowbar in the side he noticed some letters at the top of box. The letters were a very light brown, a mix between beige and dark green and the letters spelled the sentence ''Fear… is power''. ''Hey Martin come take a look at this'' he said in a high whispering tone, so that Martin would be able to hear it. Jack turned around. Martin’s flashlight wasn’t there anymore. A chill went down Jack’s spine, what had happened? Where was Martin? Is this a setup?. Jack’s head was immediately filled with all these sorts of questions and the fear spread like a fire within him. He started flailing the flashlight around to see if he could find Martin in the dark. The little light the flashlight provided finally hit something sitting over in the corner, trembling. It was Martin, he seemed to be scared shitless, like he had seen a monster. Jack rushed over to him and started shaking him to see if he reacted ''Martin, what happened?'' Martin looked at Jack like he was the devil himself and muttered ''Scarecrow'' by these words Jack stood slowly up. He knew about the Scarecrow. He could feel a faint breeze in the back of his neck, like someone was breathing him in the neck. He slowly turn around with the flashlight in eye height. When he turned around, the Scarecrow was standing directly behind him and just looking at him. He was stunned in fear just be the sight of the Scarecrow, he knew what was going to happen, his chances of surviving this wasn’t very high. And after about 2 seconds after he caught eye contact with the Scarecrow, a gas was sprayed from the mouth of the Scarecrow into Jacks face and Jack fainted.
