The Riddler is not a psychopathic murderer; rather, he is a malignant narcissist – this meaning: an extreme form of antisocial that is manifest in a person who is pathologically grandiose, lacking in conscience and behavioral regulation, and with characteristic demonstrations of joyful cruelty and sadism - with an enormous ego. He commits his crimes in order to flaunt his intellectual superiority and a large portion of his crimes are non-violent in nature. He is a genius with brilliant deductive power. His mind excels at puzzles, minds games, and manipulations, and are also obsessed with them. He likes to give the police a forewarning on his crimes, by sending them complex riddles to solve. Extremely sophisticated and a bit of the dandy, Riddler enjoys his theatrics and expresses such through his riddling patterns. Tend to be describes as an irrational man of mystery. The Riddler's criminal modus operandi is so deeply ingrained into his personality that he is virtually powerless to stop himself from acting it out. He cannot simply kill his opponents when he has the upper hand; he has to put them in a deathtrap to see if he can devise a life and death intellectual challenge that the hero cannot solve and escape. However, The Riddler's compulsion is quite flexible, allowing him to commit any crime as long as he can describe it in a riddle or puzzle. Smooth-talking yet cheeky character deemed insane by the courts of intense obsessive compulsion and neurosis.
Family: Former wife Gilda Dent. Edward did have a daughter but he killed her.
Background:
Edward grew up in a town called Waterbury, never really being the popular type. He was the geek in his class, and no one really liked him since he was different. In an early age it became clear that he had great passion for solving riddles, questions, puzzles and so on and it stuck on him. Seeking answers to every question that popped into his mind, he found himself asking endless streams of queries to adults, who would often get annoyed with him. One day at school, Edward heard about a contest from his teacher. The contest was to assemble a puzzle in the least amount of time. The winner would receive a prize. Seeking not only victory and reward but also attention and popularity, Edward became set on winning the contest. Each night, he broke into the school and practiced solving the puzzle. He practiced until he was able to solve the puzzle in fifteen seconds. After winning the contest, Edward received a book of puzzles and riddles, beginning his fascination with brain-teasers. However, after the contest, he only received attention from bullies, and not the kind he wanted. His madness, as well as his descent into crime in general, may also have roots in a yearning to rise above the anonymity that he possessed in his youth.
As Edward grew older, he opened a crooked carnival booth involving a diabolical puzzle. The customers would compete to solve the puzzle for prize money, but if they failed to do so, they would have to pay Edward a small fee for competing. In every case, Edward rigged the puzzle in advance to ensure that the customer would always fail.
Unsatisfied with the small pickings of the puzzle booth, Nashton closed the carnival attraction and a confident Edward announced to himself he was clever enough to use his wits for crime and baffle the upholders of the law. Edward concluded he would commit puzzling crimes and always fix the duel of wits between him and the law so he would always win. Donning a green costume covered with question marks, he turned to crime and set out to achieve infamy as the Riddler. At first, the Riddler proves intially successful, launching a crime wave across Gotham City.
Years passed, and Nashton found himself in the working class population. He described it as 'Being in Hell." Turning to crime as a mere reach of entertainment, Nashton discovered that he was not satisfied with simply committing a crime. He had to create hype and had to make himself known, thus becoming the Riddler (even changing his surname to Nigma). His first 'Riddle Crime' was ignored by the police. So, in return, the Riddler planned his next crime, only this time, he made sure his intentions were known. In his first confrontation with Batman, the Riddler managed to get away, but his fascination and compulsion for riddles only grew to include matching wits with the caped crusader.
In his next crime, he would need assistants, but such were difficult to find with his lack of title. Riddler tried to raise funds for his next crime by himself, which led him to encounter his future assistants, Query and Echo. Query and Echo were devoted assistants, if not "a bit on the wild side".
In his next crime, the Riddler used much more elaborate riddles and tricks to throw the police off of his intentions. Although Batman was able to see through the tricks, Riddler had already committed his crime, and was fleeing to his hideout. Batman eventually caught up to him and was able to subdue him and take out Query and Echo, though not for long. The Riddler got away, later meeting up with his assistants again. Though he lost most of the money he stole from the banks, the Riddler did gain reputation. Now more infamous, the Riddler was able to get more muscle to match with his mind for his next crime. Unfortunately for the Riddler, Batman caught up to him and was able to take out his hired hands, and then drag him to Arkham.
The Riddler formed many enemies as time passed on, and often dansed along the line of death, but always had a narrow escape. His injuries were none of what really matters, and he quickly recovered. But one day things turned against him. Under a fight with jet another enemy he was struck in the head with a mace which results in him falling into a coma. Nigma came out of his coma one year later. (As a result of his coma, The Riddler has apparently lost his compulsion for riddles, but retains both his intellect and his mammoth ego. Furthermore, he suffered severe memory loss; upon emerging from his coma, he barely remembers his own name. He does not appear to remember that Bruce Wayne and Batman are one and the same, though he does harbor some suspicions of once knowing something about Bruce Wayne.) While seemingly having overcome his compulsion for riddles, Riddler's intelligence, personality, and over-inflated ego remained. Now rejecting the title 'The Riddler' and instead going by his real name, Nigma reclaimed his life in a new hue; amassing a fortune legally as a private detective. Nigma is on the right side of the law, even if he is still yearning for that insatiable thrill of crime that his intellect demands. Riddler has since worked alongside Batman in solving a number of crimes, although Batman does so reluctantly and suspicion as to his true motives.
But the Riddlers insane and criminal nature found its way back as time passed, and a year or so after waking up from his come he turns back into his old criminal mater mind. No one really know what happened, but it is said that he just simply regained his memory.

It was perfect, simply perfect! Now everything he had to do, was lure that big bat into it! No wait… The bat was gone! No good then, all that good work wasted for nothing, but he already knew that, then why did he build it? Oh yerh that was right, another crime fighting hero thought it was his time to shine, but this should kill that career. Giggling while rubbing his gloved hands together, he jumped a little, before adjusting some few things on his newest puzzle.
Surely enough his little love note had caught the interest of yet another little rat. SNAP was the sound of the wire when it broke, followed why a wire getting dragged down by something heavy while rubbing against metal.
He simply had to laugh! It was too easy nowadays, apparently no one could challenge his criminal master mind, HA! How could there be, he was the smartest after all!
A wide grin showed on his face, which was kept a secret behind a mask form cheekbones up with a purple mask. The rest of his face was fully displayed, the top of his head being the only other thing hidden. A green bowler hat sat on top of his head with a black mark on the front. HIS trademark, and his alone. Everyone knew that, right?
He put an arm over his head on the barns, leaning his head onto it, while looking at the man struggling with the wires that bound him hanging in the air, inside the cage. Oh how sweetly he was twisting and turning to get loose. Well sadly for him his fighting spirit would be what killed him. The more he fought the tighter the wires got, like a Chinese finger-trap. He chuckled and shook his head, and finally the little boy realized that he was there.
”Who are you?! Let me loose!” the man yelled, but his captor only shook his head. ”If I told you the mystery would lose the fun in it… Let me tell you this much, towards is away, and away is life” He stepped back giggling, waving at the man that was still yelling at him. ”Bye” Then the man with the green bowler hat, dressed in a green suit started to walk away, grabbing his cane with the question mark on top. While humming a little melody, breaking into a hysterical laugh before disappearing into the depths of darkness…
Riddle me this, riddle me that… Welcome home city with no big bad bat!
